I bought the biggest and best. 17 inch anti-glare, i7 processor, 500gb HD. I even had to go to a different Apple store that night to get it. I have towers at home with everything backed up. I like having the largest screen for working with images.

Unfortunately, the same thing happened to me in January. I lost two back up bodies, all of my lighting gear, and a laptop, all in a matter of a small 5-7 minute window of being away from my car. The experience of the feeling that comes with going through something like this is unimaginable. I made one small sloppy mistake, and everything was GONE.

Nick, thanks for sharing your pain and object-lesson.

Perhaps you could share your thoughts as you consider your replacement laptop - what are the specific features that you look for when buying a laptop to use on-assignment? Do you go for a desktop-substitute and just have your whole life on that one machine, or do you go thin-and-light? Are there models that are small and easy to travel with that also have good color and enough ports and CPU to handle backup drives, etc...

Sorry to hear that Nick!
People are so stupid at times.

From my side I'm just thinking why in the hell would someone do that (not to state the obvious) but for real, I wish they would think about how important/ personal things are people.

It's hard for me to read this and not think about my cousin cars that got broken into about a month ago down here in Miami and go important papers stolen.

I hope you're able to catch up with that person.

All good advice but you neglected the most important thing that you can file under "common sense"; Never! Never! Never! Leave anything in the car!!! Geez people.

My wife smiles that knowing smile when, If I have my backpack (camera & laptop) with me, I take it where ever and when ever I exit the car. If it's just to run in for a carton of milk...it goes with me. Always.

Has my vehicle ever been broken into? Yep. Did they ever get anything important? Nope.

Nick, sorry to hear that. There are companies that offer a lojack service for laptops, so, if your laptop is stolen,it can be tracked. It might be worth looking into that.
